Driving License
At Nickel City Driving School , we guide you through the steps to get your driver's license. Our classes make the process easy and achievable.
To get a license, you need to be at least 16 years old. Since April 1994, Ontario has a graduated licensing system, meaning you need to complete three phases to get your license.
In the first step, you'll need a Driver's Handbook, available at bookstores, shops, MTO offices, and other places. Once you turn 16 and study the handbook, visit the nearest Ministry of Transportation office. You'll take a written G1 exam, and you need $125.00 in cash along with two forms of ID. Pass the exam, and you'll get a G1 license. You can take a road test one year later.
Rules with a G1 License:
Under a G1 license, there are specific rules to help you learn before your road test:
- Always drive with someone who has 4 years of G class driving experience.
- No driving between 12 am and 5 am.
- Avoid highways with speeds of 80 km or more, including the 400 series highways, unless with a licensed driving instructor.
- Keep your blood alcohol level at 0.00%.
- Don't have more passengers than seat belts.
After having a G1 license, you can reduce the waiting period for your first road test from 12 months to 8 months by taking an authorized driving course, like ours. After this time, you can take your first road test.
Pass the initial road test after 8 or 12 months, and you'll receive a G2 license. There are fewer conditions compared to G1, covered in the driver's handbook. If you want to speed up the process and understand the driving rules well, consider a private driving instructor when preparing for your G2 or G license.
